Involve beginning: The Inspiration

“You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help him find it within himself.”

So, while I was preparing for JEE , back in December 2013, our cook asked us if I could teach her 12-year-old boy who was in 5th standard in a government school. I asked her if he had any private tutor or if he went for tuitions. Hearing her answer I was astonished.

She said “Mujhe lagta hai ki tuition wale sirf paise lete hain. Mujhe paise ki fikr nahi hai, lekin mai chahti hun ki mera beta sahi me kuch seekhe. Wo bahut tej hai. I think tuitions are all about money making. I don’t have problems with spending money on my child’s education, but I want my kid to really learn something. He is a very bright kid.

A 35-year-old lady, who doesn’t even know how to read or write her name is thinking so much about her child. Obviously, being a mother she has to care.

But thinking about his education to this extent?

I must say I felt very happy after this, given that the busy schedule of parents nowadays diverts their attention from their children’s education. Some of them don’t even know/understand what their child is actually learning. They think that just sending kids to a good school will imbibe every quality in him they want their kids to have. Unfortunately, that’s not the case always.

I agreed to teach her 12th-year-old boy.

Her kid was just brilliant. I just used to give him direction and he would grasp it easily. Not just that, he would also do his homework every day.

The cook came to me one day and told “Bhaiya, ashish ab man laga raha hai padhne me. Wo khush bhi hai”. Bhaiya, Ashish (her kid) is actually putting efforts for his studies. He is happy too.

I asked myself. What did I do? I just answered why learning was important. I just gave him a purpose.

During my time teaching him, I was very happy……. And heart-broken. I thought about those million kids who were underprivileged and can’t afford quality education, Those kids who are attending schools, but are not able to adapt to them, Those kids whose parents are willing to spend a lot of money for their education, but can’t find a single source from where their kid will actually be able to learn.

Well, the disappointing part is that I didn’t have any solution for this problem. And since I had my own exams coming up, I put all my thoughts to rest. I cleared JEE and forgot everything. Until…..  Until I came in my second year and became mentor manager for Avanti fellows. I had a team of 20 IITians under me to personally mentor 11th and 12th standard kids for their preparation in JEE. And we had splendid results that year. 22 out of 24 kids qualified for mains and 5 of them into advanced. And from what? Using video lectures, personal mentoring by seniors and peer learning. And that struck me. I thought I found a solution for that problem.

I researched on the problem statement, read lots of books, met some educators and experienced people in this field, collected some relevant data and got to know that Yes! There is a need to complement the present schooling system, to improve on the learning methodologies and to give students a different perspective of what learning and education mean.

That’s how I came up with Involve.
